BSMCON Students Named Volunteer Group of the Year by Feed More

Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing (BSMCON) students in the Global Health and Population Practicum have been named Volunteer Group of the Year at Feed More’s 2026 Annual Volunteer Recognition Event, held Wednesday, April 22, at the Byrd Theatre.

Feed More is a Central Virginia organization that fights hunger by collecting, preparing and distributing food through a network of partners. Formed in 2008 through the merger of the Central Virginia Food Bank and Meals on Wheels, the organization builds on more than 50 years of service. Today, with nearly 100 employees, hundreds of partners and daily volunteers, Feed More serves 34 cities and counties, distributing tens of millions of pounds of food each year to neighbors in need.

“We are deeply honored to be recognized as Volunteer Group of the Year by Feed More,” said Amber Harmon, PhD, MPH, RN, faculty member at BSMCON. “Serving with Feed More has given us a meaningful, hands-on opportunity to address food insecurity in the Richmond community and beyond.”

“Through this practicum experience, our students make a direct impact by preparing nutritious meals that support the health of those served by Feed More,” Harmon said. “This work also helps them better understand the nonmedical factors that influence health, as well as the additional challenges faced by vulnerable populations, while contributing to Feed More’s mission.”

BSMCON adjunct faculty member Kathy Faw, MSN, RN, who served as course lead for the practicum course at the time, helped establish the partnership with Feed More as the college expanded practicum opportunities for students. After reaching out to the organization, BSMCON and Feed More leaders worked together to create a learning experience that aligned with course objectives while supporting community needs.

Students responded positively to the opportunity, gaining firsthand insight into food insecurity in their own communities. Many reported a strong sense of purpose and interest in continuing volunteer service beyond the course.

“We are immensely grateful for Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing’s generosity and dedication to our mission and are honored to recognize them at our Volunteer Appreciation Event,” said a Feed More volunteer coordinator.
