College of Nursing Awarded ABHES Accreditation

BON SECOURS MEMORIAL COLLEGE OF NURSING AWARDED INSTITUTIONAL ACCREDITATION BY ACCREDITING BUREAU OF HEALTH EDUCATION SCHOOLS

RICHMOND, Va. (November 27, 2017) – Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing has been approved for an initial grant of institutional accreditation by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) through February 28, 2021. ABHES is approved by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) for the accreditation of private, postsecondary institutions with predominantly health education programs. The new accreditation replaces the college’s previous institutional accreditation.

“Receiving institutional accreditation from ABHES is a reflection of the exceptional education our students have received for more than 55 years,” said Vice President and Provost Dr. Melanie Green. “We are a ministry of education, cultivating servant leaders who provide compassionate, quality nursing care to patients. Securing ABHES accreditation allows us to continue this tradition of excellence.”

The purpose of DOE-sanctioned accreditation is to assure that the education provided by an institution meets acceptable standards. Institutions of higher learning must be accredited in order to participate in the federal student assistance programs administered under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing holds institutional and programmatic accreditations. In addition to this new award of ABHES institutional accreditation, the college is certified to operate as an institution of postsecondary education in Virginia by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia; the college's nursing program is programmatically accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education; and the nursing program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
