DE-MSN Admission Requirements

The Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing (DE-MSN) is designed for recent college graduates or career professionals with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree to fast-track their path to becoming a master’s educated nurse. This degree is full time and a hybrid (mix of online and in-person) program that prepares students to be a Registered Nurse (RN). Students are typically in class, clinical, or lab 1-2 days a week Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Length of Program: 24 months (2 years)

Application Checklist

  • Online application and $75.00 non-refundable application fee (paid online after submission)
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, General Education Development (GED) certificate, or higher level of education
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in a completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • Official transcripts from ALL schools attended, including high school or GED
  • Foreign high school or college transcripts: Please request a credited evaluation of your transcripts. You can search this website for options: NACES
  • Additional course credit: if you took Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment (DE) or International Baccalaureate (IB), we must receive an official transcript from the appropriate host in addition to your high school transcript
  • If sending your transcripts electronically, please have them sent to admissions@bshsi.org
  • Applicants who are not U.S. citizens by birth must provide immigration or citizenship documentation. The school does not participate in the SEVIS program
  • Prerequisites / College-level General Education Requirements – a “C” grade or better in the required courses
    • Anatomy & Physiology I
    • Anatomy & Physiology II
    • College-level Math - Statistics Recommended
    • Developmental Psychology
    • Microbiology

Guaranteed Admission

Applicants who meet the following criteria are eligible for guaranteed admission, pending space availability:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree from one of the approved Virginia institutions listed below
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and
  • Have earned a grade of "B" or better in all required prerequisite courses

Christopher Newport University, College of William and Mary, George Mason University, James Madison University, Longwood University, Mary Washington University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Radford University, Randolph-Macon College, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University

  • January Admission – Apply by September 1
  • March Admission – Apply by November 1
  • May Admission – Apply by February 1
  • August Admission – Apply by April 1
  • October Admission – Apply by June 1

Admission decisions are communicated through email 4 to 5 weeks following the application deadline.

Applicants are encouraged to review their application portal to confirm receipt of all materials. Applications are valid only for the designated application cycle. Official Transcripts


From ALL schools attended including high school and any institutions where courses are currently in progress - even if final grades are not yet available.

Foreign high school or college transcripts: Please request a credited evaluation of your transcripts. You can search this website for options: NACES.

If you took Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment (DE) or International Baccalaureate (IB), we must receive an official transcript from the appropriate host in addition to your high school transcript.
